The Athens Traffic Ring (Daktylios) Is Back: Rules & Exemptions | instacar
What Is the Athens Traffic Ring- Restricted Driving Zone (Daktylios)?
The Athens Traffic Ring (Daktylios) is an environmental traffic management rule that restricts passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (up to 2.2 tonnes) from entering central Athens on weekdays based on an alternate odd/even license plate system.
Operating annually from autumn (usually October) through mid-summer, the Traffic Ring aims to reduce inner-city congestion and lower atmospheric pollution. On odd calendar dates, vehicles with license plates ending in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) can enter the central zone; on even calendar dates, vehicles ending in an even number (0, 2, 4, 6, 8) are allowed entry.
Operating Hours, Boundaries, and Fines
The restrictions apply in central Athens from Monday through Thursday between 07:00 and 20:00, and on Fridays between 07:00 and 15:00.
The rule is paused on official public holidays and during full public transport strikes. The boundaries of the inner ring zone are clearly marked by yellow traffic signs displaying the Greek letter "Δ". Driving inside the perimeter on a restricted day without a valid green badge or exemption results in an administrative fine of €100.
Outer Perimeter Boundaries of the Athens Traffic Ring
The inner Traffic Ring zone covers the area enclosed by the following main avenues and streets:
-
North / East: Alexandra’s Avenue, Zacharof, Mesogeion Avenue, Feidippidou, Michalakopoulou, Spyrou Merkouri, Vryaxidos, Ymittou.
-
South / West: Ilias Iliou, Andrea Frantzi, Andrea Syngrou Avenue, Chamosternas, Peiraios, Iera Odos, Konstantinoupoleos Avenue, Achilleos, Karaiskaki Square, Karolou, Marni, 28th of October (Patision), back to Alexandra’s Avenue.

Which Vehicles Can Enter the Traffic Ring Every Day?
Clean-energy, hybrid, electric, and low-emission vehicles are completely exempt from the odd/even rotation and can enter central Athens daily.
You can drive freely in the central zone regardless of your license plate number if your private or commercial vehicle falls into one of these emissions categories:
-
Pre-2021 Euro 6 Vehicles: Vehicles registered for the first time in an EU member state up to December 31, 2020, provided their CO2 emissions do not exceed 120 g/km.
-
Post-2021 Euro 6 Vehicles: Vehicles registered for the first time in an EU member state from January 1, 2021 onward, provided their CO2 emissions do not exceed 145 g/km.
Other Permanent Exemptions
Existing special exemptions remain valid for specific driver categories and essential services:
-
State & Emergency Vehicles: Public sector, police, fire department, and state fleet vehicles.
-
Medical & Healthcare: Doctors on urgent call (driving alone), physiotherapists treating bedridden patients, and vehicles transporting medical supplies.
-
Accessibility & Support: Vehicles transporting individuals with disabilities or severe chronic conditions requiring ongoing medical therapy (with official certification), and disabled war veterans.
-
Judicial & City Residents: Judicial officers based in the city center and permanent residents living inside the boundary ring (who must follow designated short routes to enter or exit).
-
Foreign Visitors & Rental Cars: Foreign-registered vehicles or cars rented by international tourists or overseas Greeks (valid for up to 40 consecutive days).
-
Public Transport & Taxis: Licensed city taxis and public transit buses.
